Youth Alcohol Abuse, The Interrelationship Between Coping Skills And Abusive Drinking, And The Need For Coping Skills Education

Recent teenage alcohol abuse statistics show that alcohol abuse among teens is increasing in the United States. What are some of the reasons for this? Many alcohol addiction consultants articulate that wine, beer, and liquor ads produced by the media are a fundamental reason for the increase in teen alcohol abuse.

Other alcoholism professionals state that the increase in youth alcohol abuse is due to the acceptability and ease of access of liquor, wine, and beer in our society. Still other alcohol abuse authorities think that numerous teens involve themselves in destructive drinking because of the increased anxiety that they undergo.

From a somewhat different outlook, due to the fact that both parents in a number of families work, the lack of parental guidance without a doubt has to play a major part in the proliferation of teenage alcohol abuse. And last but not least, various alcoholism authorities believe that the expansion of teen alcohol abuse is due, in some measure, to our laissez-faire society.

One aspect of adolescent alcohol abuse that seems to be poorly reported in the alcoholism research findings, to the contrary, is the nonexistence of educational programs that teach teens how to enhance their coping skills so that their excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior is significantly decreased or done away with. More to the point, scientific research has shown that there is an indirect association between poor coping skills and abusive and unhealthy drinking.

Essentially, this means that the worse the coping skills, the higher the frequency of alcohol abuse. To the extent that this is a valid allegation, why isn't coping skills training an essential part of the educational curriculum in all of our junior high schools, elementary schools, and high schools?

Let us create a scenario for explanatory purposes. Let us imagine a society in which all people are taught how to achieve good coping skills all the way from kindergarten up to and including their senior year in high school. In such a society, when life gets stressful, students who are "coping skills experts" will be able to respond in a healthier and more successful manner, contrary to others who fail to apply their coping skills.

Stated another way, students who demonstrate first-class coping skills will be more able to think proactively and demonstrate quality decision making as opposed to teenagers who, because they do not possess quality coping skills, resort to the "quick fix" of unhealthy drinking.

What would happen in the above "ideal" society, additionally, if adolescents not only received excellent coping skills training but also got an exclusive education that outlined the long term and short term harmful results associated with alcohol abuse and drug abuse? Such an emphasis on teenage alcohol and drug abuse facts, along with more highly developed coping skills training, it is declared, would help teens stay away from the noticeable charm interlinked with teen drinking and, accordingly, would significantly lessen the alcohol abuse shown by teens in our country.

There are obviously a number of legitimate reasons why so many of our adolescents drink in a destructive manner. Such a complex subject matter demands a comprehensive and more pertinent response by our students, educators, politicians, and parents so that our adolescents can learn how to cope with life's predicaments in a more productive and responsible manner rather than gravitating to alcohol abuse to solve their problems.
