A Woman Manifest Signs Of Alcohol Abuse And Depression And Makes An Appointment To See Her Doctor

Cindy was a thirty-four-year-old physical therapist who knew that she had a drinking problem. As an illustration, within the past three months she has experienced the need to have a drink or two before going to work, a week ago she failed to pass a random blood alcohol test where she works, three months ago she got arrested for a DUI, and lastly, for the past two months she has started to forget what she says and does when she goes out drinking with her friends.

Similar to other people, Cindy's alcohol involvement began slowly and continued at this level of involvement for quite some time because at times she engaged in casual social drinking. In actual fact, for approximately nine months, every time she drank, she made sure to drink in moderation. Something about her drinking, however, seemed to drastically change when she got divorced.

Cindy got extremely disheartened about the breakup with her husband, and as a way to refrain from dwelling on her negative feelings she made up her mind to begin hanging out more frequently with some of her pals who love to have fun drinking. It didn't take too long, however, before her drinking increased considerably the more often she went to and drank at dinner dates, private parties, family get-togethers, sporting events, and happy hours with her friends.

In short, she was drinking and having a great time just like everyone else in her group of buddies without giving much thought to the alcohol short term effects and especially about the alcohol long term effects she has been going though. Yet somewhere in her brain she realized the facts about the negative alcohol effects on the body and on the brain and that she probably needed alcohol counseling but avoided the thought as much as possible.

One morning during her annual physical examination, her doctor asked her if she drank alcohol. Not wanting to lie to her physician, Cindy "came clean" and stated that she routinely drinks more than she should. In fact, she stated that she regularly drinks in an irresponsible manner. Then Cindy informed her doctor about her depression. More specifically, she mentioned that wrecked relationships many times triggered a disheartening cycle of events characterized by increased drinking which further resulted in more negative feelings that, in turn, led to more drinking. And this is precisely what took place when she and her husband got divorced two years ago.

Cindy's physician then told her the following: "I am not trying to make an unprepared judgment, but with your medical situation we may be facing two separate matters. As a consequence, I think we ought to make an appointment for you to get an alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency evaluation from my partner, Dr. Verlich, who is an alcohol addiction specialist."

"Whether your drinking circumstance is more associated with alcohol abuse or alcohol addiction is not clear at this time, but I think that further exploration is reasonable. Then I think we should make an appointment for you to get a psychological exam from another one of my partners, Dr. Devor, who is a clinical psychologist."

"I need to get a better handle on your depression and see how much your drinking and depression are associated." Cindy displayed her satisfaction with her doctor's strategy and thanked him for his assistance.
