A Ninth Grader Drinks Excessively With His Buddies, Suffers From An Alcohol Overdose, And Learns That Learning Something In Class Can Make A Difference
Andy was a high school ninth grader who regularly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had a daring personality and frequently wanted to do what his older brothers were doing. The essential holdup with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a consequence able from a legal point of view to operate a truck or car and to ingest alcohol.
Andy, conversely, had a tough time comprehending that as a fifteen-year-old adolescent he should not be drinking alcoholic beverages. In fact, then again, Andy generally drank with his high school friends after school, largely on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy made up his mind to drive around with some of his older pals. One of his cronies was old enough to buy alcohol. After purchasing some beer, wine coolers, and wine, Andy and all of his cronies went to a public recreational area and drank for about two or three hours.
After drinking something like eight glasses of wine, Andy started to feel nauseous and then vomited. When he became unconscious on the tennis court, one of his drinking pals called 911 for immediate help. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his friends went to the hospital to see Andy, they were informed that Andy had been exhibiting alcohol poisoning symptoms. Simply put, Andy had suffered through an alcohol overdose.
After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was truthfully startled to realize that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had roughly five or ten alcoholic beverages. When he articulated this to the attending physician at the hospital, on the other hand, the healthcare professional notified Andy that drinking five or ten wine coolers over a two or three hour time frame could certainly be quite a bit more alcohol than can be metabolized by the body. The healthcare practitioner further explained how excessive alcohol can cause the brain to shut down an individual's breathing and that when this transpires, an individual can perish.
This was the first cautionary message to Andy that he was drinking in a harmful way and that there are consequences for such activities. The healthcare professional told Andy that he was a fortunate individual because he almost lost his life from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The healthcare practitioner also spoke to Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehab for Andy. His parents were delighted that Andy was safe and sound and notified the healthcare professional that they would look into getting Andy alcohol rehabilitation.
While speaking to his parents, Andy informed them that there must be a solid reason why he did not die and that he felt a sense of thankfulness that he was still alive. He also notified his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking event was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning the previous six week grading period in Mr. Johnson's health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was teaching didn't seem to make a lot of sense to Andy. Now that he almost died, in spite of this, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in Mr. Johnson's health class and applied what he had learned to his life.
Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go to Mr. Johnson's classroom and express regret to Mr. Johnson for not showing more attention to something that was as relevant as learning about alcohol poisoning.
