A Health And Physical Education Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Significance Of Alcohol Dependency Signs
Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most financially challenged private high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only one year, she had already acquired a reputation as a teacher with educational methods that motivated and stimulated her pupils to learn and to think.
For instance, one Monday morning at 10:30 she addressed her students and announced the following: "For the next four or five days we are going to learn about some typical alcoholism signs from a more wide-ranging viewpoint and we are also going to learn about a number of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more specific perspective."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will undeniably prove that someone with a drinking problem is an individual who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a drinker displays, the more likely it is that she or he is an individual who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then told the members of the class that each student would be accountable for investigating four alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her results to the rest of the class via a five minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol addiction signs that were discussed and presented in the presentations and in class. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to study the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After about five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and explained to the students in her classroom that after she studies the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told the pupils in her class to look over the data on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any concerns, questions, or issues. Within 10 or 20 seconds, just about every student in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the pupils had some questions, concerns, or issues about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism professionals. For example, just about every person in the class disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism specialists, namely, "Do you feel extremely sick when you stop drinking?"
Miss Jackson then explained to her pupils why this answer was the most accurate indicator of alcohol addiction. She underscored the fact that the major difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
In effect this means that when an individual who is alcohol dependent all of a sudden stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol dependent person, the students started to appreciate the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcohol dependency.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Based on the buzz manifested by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson realized that she had encouraged and inspired the pupils in her class to stop and think about a critical social problem and health issue that exists in our culture.
